While there are certainly foods that can put on belly fat (like fructose and alcohol – that’s why it’s called a beer belly) I haven’t really found any evidence of foods that could slice off fat from a specific region. But thankfully there are other fat burning foods that remove belly fat as well as fat from other places on the body!
Having scoured the net recently I found some interesting takes on different ideas on the best fat burning foods out there . Turns out, a lot of foods touted to be healthy also deserve an honorable place in the list of fat burning foods.
Salmon contains a lot of Omega-3 fatty acids that act against inflammation and boost the metabolism. I guess well just have to take it as a fringe benefit that the meat tastes awesome (especially when grilled) and if its not farmed, its full of natural vitamins and strong antioxidants (that give it that pinkish color).
Turkey is another great meat for burning fat. Turkey has a very high protein content and low fat content so it is a very good source of lean protein. Protein as a much higher thermic effect than the other two macronutrients, roughly 30%! Meaning that 30% of all calories ingested as protein get used up as body heat.
Beef is a very popular meat around the world due to its taste and wide availability. Lean beef especially is a great fat burning food as it contains more choline than other meats and choline helps the liver get rid of fat so that it could function properly.
Green tea is a drink that the Japanese have enjoyed for centuries. Mainstream media and science have thankfully long caught up with the beneficial aspects of drinking it (or taking green tea extract). Apart from the flavonoids which protect against cancer, green tea contains a compund called EGCG which stimulates the nervous system, resulting in an increase in metabolism.
Hot peppers like jalapenos contain capsaicin – the compound that puts the hot before the hot peppers. Interestingly enough it works that way because it activates heat-detecting nerves, creating the sensation for the brain that one is eating very hot food.
But they’re fantastic at increasing blood flow and elevating the heart rate which also mean a slightly elevated metabolism!
Broccoli is something that I could eat until I was really full. It’s so tasty! It’s also dense with nutrients including calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid, and fiber. It is also an ample source of antioxidants that with the nutrients work together to nourish the body while not making it fat. And lets face it, no-one will ever get fat while stuffing themselves with broccoli.
So in conclusion, adding more meat is almost never something that people would not like to do unless they’re vegetarians. And if you are, you are probably very cold in winter time!
